Forged vs. Cast Irons: Does the Premium Buy Better Performance?

In the cast head, grain size and crystal orientation varied noticeably from one region of the face to another, because the structure of cast metal depends heavily on how quickly the liquid cools inside the mold. The forged head told a different story: smaller, more compact grains arranged in a consistent orientation across the entire face.
That consistency is the forging advantage in a single image. Pressing solid metal the same way, again and again, produces the same internal structure again and again, so one iron in a forged set closely matches the next. Manufacturers could cool castings faster to shrink the grains, but doing so risks a brittle head that may not hold up to impact.
The Feel Debate Is Real But Misunderstood
Golfers describe forged irons as soft, buttery and muted, and there is real physics behind the perception. Much of what we call feel at impact is actually sound. Vibration and acoustic energy travel differently through different grain structures, and grain boundaries absorb some of that energy along the way, so a cast head and a forged head genuinely can sound and feel different at impact.
Process is only one ingredient in the recipe, though. Head geometry does much of the heavy lifting. Ownership habits differ a little as well.
