For a quick reference, a 15-handicap golfer has a published Shot Scope driver Performance-Average of about 238 yards, while a 25-handicap golfer is around 204 yards. Those are on-course performance benchmarks, not guaranteed carry distances over water or a bunker.

Carry distance is the distance from impact to the point where the ball first lands. Total distance adds the bounce and roll that follow. A third number, on-course performance distance, summarizes real shots recorded during play and may include both flight and rollout.

Golf Club Distance Chart by Handicap
Handicap is useful for broad comparisons because lower-handicap golfers tend to produce more speed and more consistent contact. It is not a perfect distance predictor. A short-hitting five-handicap can still control the ball far better than a longer 20-handicap.

Do not copy a column directly onto your scorecard. If your 7-iron carries 138 yards repeatedly, 138 is a more useful number than the 150-yard estimate beside a similar handicap. Beginners should prioritize predictable contact over maximum distance. A shorter shot that finishes near its expected yardage is more valuable than one perfect strike surrounded by heavy, thin or offline misses.

These are broad developing-player ranges, not requirements. A beginner with athletic speed can hit farther but remain inconsistent, while another may hit shorter and score better. Driver swing speed is a better starting point for carry potential than age or gender. It still cannot predict distance by itself. Ball speed, strike location, launch angle, spin, delivered loft and weather determine how effectively speed becomes carry.
The chart below is a rounded planning model for well-struck shots in neutral conditions. The speed headings refer to driver club speed. It is not a controlled MG Golf equipment test and should not be treated as a promise of yardage.

If you are unsure of your speed, use a launch monitor at a fitting or practice facility. Do not choose a column based on the one swing that produced your fastest reading. Your normal playing speed and normal strike are what matter.

Average distance generally changes as club speed, mobility and strike pattern change, but age does not assign a golfer a fixed yardage. Skill, strength, injury history, equipment, practice and contact quality can outweigh age.

Full-Bag Reference for Senior Golfers
A senior golfer who swings the driver near 80 mph should begin with the 80 mph column in the swing-speed chart, not with a universal senior average. That produces an estimated 195-yard driver carry, 120-yard 7-iron carry and 100-yard pitching-wedge carry under efficient conditions.
If the 4-iron, 5-iron and hybrid all carry a similar distance, keeping all three may not help. More loft and easier-launching fairway woods or hybrids can create more useful gaps. Do not chase a tour player's number. TrackMan lists PGA TOUR and LPGA Tour driver speeds above typical amateur figures, and professional players also deliver the club and strike the ball more efficiently. Matching a professional's club speed does not guarantee the same launch, spin or carry.

How Far Should an Average Golfer Hit a Driver?
A 15-handicap golfer's Shot Scope driver P-Avg is approximately 238 yards on the course. This is not a pure carry number. A golfer swinging near 90 mph may carry a well-struck driver about 215 to 225 yards, while launch, spin and contact can move the result substantially.
Use driver carry to select a safe landing area and clear trouble. Use total distance only after accounting for turf firmness, slope and wind. If your drives finish at inconsistent distances, record both the carry and the strike location before assuming the club is the problem.
What Is the Average 4-Iron Distance?
A practical 4-iron carry range is roughly 145 to 180 yards for many recreational golfers, depending on speed, loft and strike. Faster, consistent players may carry it 190 yards or more. Golfers with slower speeds may see little separation between a 4-iron and 5-iron.
The number stamped on the sole does not tell you the loft. One modern 4-iron can be several degrees stronger than another, changing launch and distance. If the ball will not launch high enough to stop or create a useful gap, a hybrid or 7-wood may be a better scoring club.
What Is the Average 7-Iron Distance?

Arccos reported a 164-yard 7-iron Smart Distance for golfers aged 21-30 and 140 yards for golfers aged 60 and over, but Smart Distance is an on-course well-hit-shot measure rather than pure carry.
Because 7-iron loft can vary widely, compare the actual loft and your launch-monitor carry before judging your distance against an average.
What Is the Average 9-Iron Distance?
A recreational 9-iron distance often carries roughly 100 to 130 yards. The speed chart estimates about 105 yards at an 80 mph driver swing, 120 yards at 90 mph and 130 yards at 100 mph. Your stock number should be the median of repeatable strikes, not the longest shot in a range session.
Check the gap from 9-iron to pitching wedge. A 20-yard hole can leave an uncomfortable scoring distance, while a gap of only five yards may indicate inconsistent contact or lofts that are too close.
How Modern Iron Lofts Change Golf Club Distances
Two clubs labeled 7-iron can have meaningfully different lofts. Many modern distance irons use stronger lofts than traditional sets. This is sometimes called loft jacking, although manufacturers may pair stronger lofts with lower centers of gravity to help the ball launch.
A modern 7-iron may travel farther partly because its loft resembles an older 6-iron. That does not automatically make the club better or worse. The important questions are whether it launches high enough, stops predictably and creates useful gaps on both sides.

Measure in calm, representative conditions when possible. Then add a small on-course adjustment rather than rewriting your base yardage for every weather change.

How to Build Your Personal Golf Distance Chart
Your personal chart should describe the shot you can produce repeatedly. One flushed ball is not a stock number.
- Use the same ball model. Changing balls during the session adds another variable.
- Warm up first. Do not count the first few swings while your speed and contact are still changing.
- Hit 8 to 12 shots with each club. Record carry with a reliable launch monitor when possible.
- Remove true outliers only. Exclude a topped ball or shank, but keep ordinary misses that represent your normal game.
- Use the median. The middle result is less distorted by one unusually long or short shot.
- Check the gaps. Look for overlaps and gaps that are too large to cover comfortably.
- Confirm on the course. Compare calm practice numbers with real shots from normal lies.
- Update when something changes. Recheck after a fitting, equipment change, swing change or meaningful speed gain or loss.

This is a research-based benchmark guide, not an MG Golf club test. The charts intentionally keep different distance definitions separate.
- Handicap chart: Driver values use Shot Scope P-Avg figures. The remaining full-bag values are rounded planning estimates anchored to those driver benchmarks and ordinary club gaps.
- Swing-speed chart: Rounded carry estimates use driver speed as the baseline. Other clubs are scaled into a plausible full-bag progression. These are modeled estimates, not measured population averages.
- Age chart: Selected driver and 7-iron Smart Distance figures come from Arccos. One 41-50 7-iron value is explicitly labeled as inferred from Arccos' reported four-yard decline per age bracket.
- Men's and women's chart: These are TrackMan Combine club-speed benchmarks, not yardage claims.
- Beginner chart: Broad developing-player ranges are editorial planning estimates intended to emphasize consistency, not minimum standards.
