Slope on a golf rangefinder measures the elevation change between you and the target, then estimates the distance the shot will play after accounting for that uphill or downhill angle. A flag that is 150 yards away in a straight line may play longer uphill or shorter downhill.
That adjusted number can make club selection much simpler on uneven ground. It is still only one piece of the puzzle, though. What a Slope Reading Actually Tells You

A standard laser rangefinder gives the direct distance from the device to the flagstick, bunker lip, tree, or other target. This is the line-of-sight measurement. If the display reads 150 yards, the target is 150 yards away along that direct line.
A slope-capable rangefinder also uses an internal angle sensor, often called an inclinometer, to detect whether the target sits above or below your position. It then combines that angle with the measured distance to produce an adjusted figure intended to help with club selection.

What Slope Mode Does Not Calculate

- Wind: A headwind can add distance requirements even on a downhill shot, while a strong helping wind can change a shot completely.

When You Can Use Slope and When It Must Be Disabled

Competition is different. Distance-only information is generally permitted under the Rules of Golf unless a Local Rule says otherwise, while slope and other functions that measure or estimate elevation change cannot be used. A player who breaches Rule 4.3 normally receives the general penalty: loss of hole in match play or two penalty strokes in stroke play.

Is a Slope Rangefinder Worth It?
A slope rangefinder is most useful for golfers who regularly play courses with meaningful elevation changes or who want help turning visual uncertainty into a repeatable club-selection process. It can also be useful during practice, when comparing the adjusted distance with your own sense of how a shot plays.
Players on mostly flat courses may get less value from the feature. They may still prefer a slope-capable unit because it can be disabled for competition and used when a course does have elevated greens or downhill tee shots.
