Scottie Scheffler Passes Tiger Woods for PGA Tour Money Record

Scheffler began Sunday three shots behind Viktor Hovland and finished three in front, closing with a 66 at East Lake that delivered a $10 million check, a second FedExCup and the career earnings record Tiger Woods had held since February 2000.

Scottie Scheffler saved his sharpest golf of the week for the day it mattered most. Trailing Viktor Hovland by three entering the final round, the world No. 1 shot a four under 66 on Sunday and won the Tour Championship by three shots, collecting nearly everything the PGA Tour season had left to give: a second FedExCup, a $10 million winner's check, and the top spot on the career money list.

"Coming from behind and being able to win tournaments is a really cool feeling," Scheffler said at the trophy ceremony.

A Near Ace Lit The Fuse

Scheffler announced his intentions early, flushing a 5 iron, a club the average golfer carries 174 yards, to within two inches at the 211 yard par 3 second hole for a tap in birdie. A birdie putt from 25 feet at the fourth pulled him even with Hovland, and he moved in front for the first time at the 13th and never gave the lead back. He dropped shots at the seventh, where a wedge from the fairway missed badly, and at the 14th from an ugly lie in the rough, yet he was still the only player among the final three groups to break par. His last birdie came at the par 4 16th, where he played from a fairway bunker to 11 feet and converted, finishing the week at 16 under.

Hovland, chasing his first FedExCup after three straight rounds of 65 or better, managed a single birdie in a two over 72 and settled for solo second, worth $5 million. Three of his putts in a four hole stretch caught the edge of the cup and stayed out, two for birdie and one for par. Ryan Gerard, who began the day one behind Hovland, made double bogey at the opening hole, ran off 13 consecutive pars, and shot 72 to finish alone in third.

The week had been building toward that Sunday shootout ever since the favorites were handicapped at East Lake. Min Woo Lee opened the tournament with a 62 in his East Lake debut, Gerard and Hovland shared the lead through 36 holes, and Hovland took a one shot edge over Gerard into the final round with Scheffler lurking at 12 under.

The End Of A 26 Year Reign

The victory carried a payout unlike anything East Lake used to offer. The Tour Championship's $40 million purse counts as official money for the second consecutive year, and the $10 million first prize lifted Scheffler's career total to $130,390,661, moving him past Tiger Woods atop the PGA Tour career money list. Woods, whose official earnings stand at $120,999,166, had occupied the No. 1 position since February 13, 2000, when a tie for second at Torrey Pines first carried him to the top.

The record had been living on borrowed time since Memphis. Scheffler's runaway win at the FedEx St. Jude Championship moved him past Rory McIlroy into second on the list and within $1,034,755 of the record, and a tie for 12th at the BMW Championship trimmed the gap to $608,505 entering Atlanta. He erased it by winning outright. McIlroy, who tied for fourth at East Lake alongside six others, came up just short of reclaiming second place on the career list from Woods. Scheffler has resisted framing the milestone as a scoreboard against Woods, calling comparisons across eras "apples and oranges" and crediting Woods with driving the commercial growth behind modern purses.

The season haul set a record of its own: $30,937,525 in official money, surpassing his previous single season mark of $29,228,357 from 2024. Entering the finale he already led second place Cameron Young by more than $6.5 million. Three Wins, Five Second Place Finishes

The FedExCup caps a season defined as much by near misses as by trophies. Scheffler won his 2026 debut at The American Express in January, then went winless until August while stacking up five second place finishes, including a Monday playoff loss to Hovland at the Travelers Championship. Sunday delivered a measure of payback for that defeat. The postseason wins at Memphis and East Lake gave Scheffler three titles for the year and a share of the Tour lead alongside Chris Gotterup, Matt Fitzpatrick and Wyndham Clark.

It was the 22nd PGA Tour title of Scheffler's career, 13 of them by three shots or more, and his 25th worldwide counting the Olympic gold medal he won in Paris two years ago. It also strengthens his case for a fifth consecutive Jack Nicklaus Award as Player of the Year, which would tie the record run Woods once assembled. With the season's trophies handed out, the question for 2027 is whether anyone can slow Scheffler down.
